Language Plot Chart

It was requested that we get some sort of a chart going to show what characters speak what languages (so folks can coordinate that sort of thing OOC, if they want)! So if you guys want to be included in the upcoming chart I'm going to make, please comment here talking about what kind of languages your character speaks (or writes).

What can they speak fluently? Passably? Barely? Can they do anything special that would help them translate? Do you have any particular notes about the way they speak the language? Go into as much or as little detail as you'd like, and I'll try and put something together. And if you don't want to wait for a chart, feel free to go ahead and plot amongst yourselves here too. :)

Seppun Tashime: Speaks Rokugani, a language that is roughly equivalent to Japanese.

[identity profile] justcharles.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Charles: Is telepathic, but otherwise can speak German, Russian, and I think French. Obviously English, but he's likely going to be making liberal use of his telepathy otherwise.

Jono: Can speak German and British English

Raiden: can speak English, Japanese (poorly), and a smidge of Inuit as a result of his pilgrimage to Alaska to learn Scouting

Might as well... do my own too sdjfslkdf.

Zelman speaks very fluent Japanese, (British) English, French, Russian, German, probably Chinese, and slightly outdated Polish. He can manage his way through a lot of the other languages you would find floating around Europe, with varying degrees of outdated vocabulary and success the further East you go. He's old, okay.

It might be worth noting that he doesn't use any honorifics when speaking Japanese, probably because he's an arrogant prat that way.

Nikola Tesla: Serbian (Serbo-Croatian) is his native language, and he can also speak Latin, Italian, French, and German.

Newton Pulsifer: Only British English.

Man in Black: There is no canon explanation on how many languages he can speak, but since he did download the information of every single survivor's mind, he probably knows everything from Korean to Iranian and everything in between, really. :I

Rin: speaks old Japanese, from around 1782. Have fun deciphering that, modern speakers. She speaks in a feminine fashion and is very polite. She may have picked up a few English words from her time in Paradisa.

Tyki: speaks Portuguese, but I believe everyone in DGM speaks English... I headcanon that he can cuss and fumble his way through most European language too. At very least, he could make a proper lady conversant with the language blush.

Crowley - Can speak every language ever. The end. - He will be willing to translate for people, for the price of alcohol. Bare in mind he IS a troll and will occasionally translate things wrong on purpose.

Lorne - Fluent in (American) English, Pylean and passable in a few Buffyverse demonic languages

John Marston - Fluent English - very poor Spanish

Maladict - Borogravian (http://wiki.lspace.org/wiki/Borogravia), Morporkian (http://wiki.lspace.org/wiki/Morporkian) and presumably a little Überwaldian (http://wiki.lspace.org/wiki/%C3%9Cberwald). Though they do echo Earth languages, they're not an exact match. Poor little other planet girl, all alone :<

Spike - Horse whinnies. Raised by ponies man.

Fenris - Arcanum (http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Tevinter_Imperium#Imperial_language) (which is VERY similar to Latin) Qunari (http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Qunari%20language), Thedas commmon tongue and a little ASL - canonically picks up languages very quickly.

John Egbert- Fluent (American) English.

Peter Parker- Fluent (American) English.

Rinzler- Fluent (American) English... And Binary! Does that count?

My characters are boring. :(

Alan Bradley: Speaks English. Since he's a programmer, he can read and write a bunch of programming languages - mostly whatever languages Tron and the Encom operating systems are written in, I guess. Canon doesn't really go into detail on this, so I'm going to be just as vague.

[identity profile] shadow-immortal.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Azure Kite: Japanese, German and English. He can also write in English and L33T.

Dainn: English, I think.

Dextera: Can't talk ;_; But he can write in English and the Order of Malkuth's code though canon is mean and won't provide translations.

clarification

[identity profile] twisted-baroque.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
For the Order of Malkuth's code, the Baroque Word Guidance book decribes it as "All the languages meshed together but not them at the same time." so I guess if someone knows a lot of languages they might be able to pick out something here and there but they might not mean the same thing they do usually. Messed up canon is messed up.

[personal profile] longaevus 2011-08-15 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Kitty Pryde: English and rather basic Spanish (which she's forgotten most of - headcanon'd but... most schools teach Spanish right?)

Helen Magnus: /kicks canon for this
English, French, German, Zulu, some Serbian (tyvm Nikola), mostly likely some Japanese, erm... is it cheating to say every language ever? She's travelled, had chance to live with many cultures and has had to learn things (and also wants to for nerdery). Latin too along with BSL & ASL. And Ancient Vampire. /leaves it there. She'll have passable bits and bobs/basics of others but they're the main things?

Tomoe Himura; Japanese (fluently).

Lana Luthor; English (fluently), French (passably), and Mandarin Chinese (passably). I feel like I'm blanking something so this is tentative until I can talk with Jenn.

Joshua Christopher; English (fluently) and American Sign Language (fluently).

Jr.; His native language is...whatever the hell they speak in Xenosaga. IDK what to call it. ;( But he can also speak/write English (fluently), Japanese (passably, mostly writes in hiragana), Latin (fluently, or as fluent as someone can be in latin), German (passably), Spanish (barely), Hebrew (fluently), and Ancient Aramaic (passably). He knows random words and phrases in French, Greek, Italian, and Romanian, but can't actually carry a conversation with them. GOSH I HOPE I REMEMBERED EVERYTHING.

Aziraphale: Every language ever. He'll be willing to translate accurately, and for no price, unlike his asshole demon counterpart.

Pinkie Pie: Whinnies and neighs.

[identity profile] 3-butterflies.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ritsu Kasanoda : Japanese. Incredibly weak English (since he was at a very important school I assume they had English lessons).

Minnie Mouse : English.

Fluttershy : Horse whinnies.

[identity profile] goldencirclet.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Son Goku: Speaks Chinese due to Saiyuki taking place in China, but also some Japanese. (Because the manga is Japanese and Minekura uses Japanese names for characters/places - ie, he's Son Goku, not Sun Wukong)

Nozdormu: Speaks all kinds of Azerothian languages (even dabbled in Nerglish), though his native tongue is Draconic. The Azerothian 'Common' is equivalent to English. (Plus he's got telepathic speaking =P)

Katara: I'm going to have to get with Red on this, but I'd think that they speak their own sort of Avatarlanguage. The different nations all seem to have different cultures/nationalities, but they speak a common language, SO I AM NOT SURE.

Gunn: Speaks English.

Haruhi: Japanese.

Chuck Charles: English, French, Swedish, German, Chinese, and Japanese.

Hiccup: Going to say he speaks Norse, because despite the Scottish accents in the movie, they write in Elder Futhark. /nerd
ino: (Huh?)

[personal profile] ino 2011-08-15 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on the writing in Avatar it seems like it might be vaguely Chinese, but idk ... :|a

ino: (Yay~!!)

[personal profile] ino 2011-08-15 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Ino: Speaks pretty much nothing but the language spoken in Konoha, which I am guessing is likely a warped/ancient version of Japanese. Knows a few words in English and French but nothing really helpful or useful.

Tavros: Alternian, and ... Guessing he knows English fluently too to be able to communicate with the kids? What say you, Homestuck cast?

Vereesa: Fluent common (English), fluent Thalassian, a little Darnassian

Nancy: Fluent English

Nepeta: Fluent Alternian and English

[identity profile] onemanshort.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Jilly Coppercorn: English - fluent. French - probably basic conversational things, but not much else.

Kaylee Frye: English and Mandarin. Fluent in both.

Seeley Booth: English only.
demonologist: (adjusting spectacles)

Wesley Wyndam-Pryce

[personal profile] demonologist 2011-08-15 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Since Wes is meant to be a polyglot and accomplished translator and linguist, I would presume he is able to speak more languages than I can specify (everything from latin, greek, mandarin, french etc to proto-bantu, magyaric, akkadian, sanskrit and so on - not to mention dozens of demonic/non-human languages). Let's assume, however, that generally Wes is better at comprehension than speaking fluently and written over verbal.

Spike Spiegel (and Faye incidentally): Mandarin Chinese, with at least some understanding of English. (May not be 100% fluent in English, but know enough to get by.)

I remembered reading about this on tvtropes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Headscratchers/CowboyBebop), haha;; Their logic worked for me! (Also the Mandarin part was me matching up screencaps of the Chinese they were reading with google searches of what I knew they said... so I hope that's right!;;)

"...it's heavily implied that the crew's common language is Chinese: Jet is reading e-mails in Chinese or pointing on the Chinese 'No Smoking' sign for warning Spike, Faye's from Singapore, Spike used to work for the Triads and so on. Also, the crew seems to like to anchor the Bebop at a port of a Martian chinatown."

"...the Bebop crew is implied to speak Chinese, but English is the lingua franca of the Solar System, much as it is now on Earth. This makes sense in the continuity of the series-after the Gate accident, the Earth was chaotically evacuated and people ended up in a thoroughly mixed amalgamation of nationalities in cities all across the Solar System. English is the most commonly learned second language in the world today, so that status would be strengthened in that sort of situation. But one in six people on Earth today is Chinese, so they would be the most common nationality in these new communities."

"Note that in "Speak Like a Child", Spike and Jet are only able to read the Japanese sign in the old museum (in Japan itself) because of the English printed below it."

[identity profile] someoneto-carry.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
...My god is there anything Joss Whedon didn't steal from Bebop?

Zoe: English (fluent) and Chinese (either fluent or mostly so). chinese is slightly butchered since it's 500 years in the future and the writers of the show fail. And I'm pretty sure it's Mandarin that they use in the show...correct me if I'm wrong.

Allen: British English (fluent) is his native language and since he traveled all his life...based on where he's shown in canon I'm gonna go with he can speak Hindi (passable), French (semi-passable), Arabic (decent), German (alrightish) and he can scream that there's a lion in Swahili and order food in a lot of other European languages. Literacy wise with those languages, he can stumble through any of them that use the Latin alphabet (with spelling being TERRIBLE) and for the non-latin based...he can probably read words that involve food, money or debts. :|b

Mandarin = the spoken language generally known as "Chinese" when written, aka Putonghua.

Does that help?

[identity profile] delincuente.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex Russo: American English (fluent), and Spanish (dismally). She also has a spell that makes visual subtitles to what people are saying in other languages, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work in reverse. So she can translate what most of the other residents are saying, but they still won't be able to understand her.

Mitsukuni Haninozuka: Japanese (fluent), and he is seen speaking pretty decent English in the manga, so I'd say at his current canon point it's at least passable.

Rose Lalonde: American English (fluent).

Nico di Angelo: American English (fluent), and Ancient Greek, though I'm really not sure how to determine the fluency of this one - demigods are "hard-wired" to read it, and he's seen chanting in it a couple of times, but it's hard to distinguish if it's something he can just switch into voluntarily or not. So I'm gonna say partially fluent.

MORGANA -- Speaks Ye Old English (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L7VTH8ii_8) fluently, with her sexy accent and all that.

ALTAIR -- Speaks Arabic (fluently) and Draconic (fluently) thanks to being one of Mama's Dragonsworn.

Galadriel speaks fluent Quenya (http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Quenya), Sindarin (http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Sindarin), and Westron (http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Westron) (AKA "Common tongue.") Headcanon says she also speaks a little Khuzdûl (http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Khuzdul) (Dwarvish). Think on the level of a very talented beginner.

Still considering what exactly I am going to do with her telepathy/psychicness, but it will undoubtedly help in one way or another.

Alleyne: It's all but explicitly stated that the language of the mainlands that the capital of Gainos is on is Russian of all things. Only it's written more runic and less like Cyrillic. For now though I'll pass it off and say the runes are based on Cyrillic and given her age, she'd know both, so fluent Russian in any form it is.

There's also Hinomoto, the obligatory Japanese allegory land, that uses Japanese. (Hinomoto in itself is an alternate reading of the kanji that spell Nippon.) Seeing as she speaks with one of the girls from there, Tomoe, in one of the novels I believe, I would say she's at least picked up a couple basic phrases. Nothing beyond greetings and "I am (name)" most likely though.
