Soft Reboot Proposal
So a few weeks ago on HTG, Theresa set a ball at the top of a hill and I gave it a good shove and now a bunch of us on the staff are giving serious thought to the idea of giving Paradisa's setting a "soft reboot," eliminating a lot of the contradictory ideas that have developed over the years. As a result, I will be submitting a proposal for it to the game's player base as a whole!
Ideally, I'll have this proposal finished within the week and after that we'll be able to talk about how soon we can implement it.
What is a "soft" reboot?
When serial fiction goes through a reboot, it discards all continuity so that everything –– character, setting, history –– can all be started from the beginning. However, we don't want to lose character continuity or Paradisa's history… we just want to make the universe they exist in a little more streamlined and easy! As a result, we're just doing a "soft" reboot, taking Paradisa's setting and reducing it to the most essential concepts in a way that we feel is ripe for new story opportunities. We want new players and old alike to feel welcome and unburdened by years of muddled ideas about the setting.
What's the current train of thought?
Paradisa was a pretty unique thing for its time back in 2006, before Latin-esque-named jamjars in mysterious pseudo-modern cities with some all-powerful mysterious overlord became the norm… and in the time since, it's become pretty generic. As a result, we want our new setting to do something a little different. I feel the best way to accomplish this is to make Paradisa a little more swords-and-sorcery, in a pseudo-medieval fantasy land à la Ella Enchanted or Beauty and the Beast. Knights, lords, princesses, dragons, fairies, and a magical castle in the middle of it all!
Are characters going to be aware of the change?
Yes. Ideally, it will come in at the end of a plot and become the new status quo.
Are we going to lose science/electricity/modern conveniences?
The castle will retain modern conveniences, but it will run on magic. The city will lose them; this means living in the city (to escape the castle) will mean making some sacrifices!
Change?!
Paradisa is very different than how it used to be. Change is our lifeblood! I hope you can roll with us, as I think this is something Paradisa really needs, given how old we are. Ideally it will revitalize the game, make it easier for new players and clear up the years of clutter the older players have accumulated. Characters will be able to explore Paradisa as something very familiar yet very new and exciting all over again, but it won't work unless we as players are excited about it. I really am pumped about change.
Other questions?
If anyone has any ideas/suggestions or just wants to point out something that has been confusing to them that they want to see addressed by a soft-reboot, leave them on this post or shoot 'em to me or Pan so we can take it into consideration. We will be posting the proposal to the OOC comm before putting it into action, so there will be an opportunity to iron-out any issues that arise!
Cheers!
