HOW'S THE GAME?

HOW'S THE GAME?

It's been awhile! It's time for another round of Game Discussion, also known as "How's The Game?"

Here we come together to discuss the game, its plots, the settings, and just about anything we can think of that we'd like to talk about, expand upon, improve, change, etc.

This is not an HMD for players and their characters; this should be about the game's function as a whole and not the people in it. If there is something you feel is absolutely necessary to address that involves a specific person, please IM a mod first to discuss it. We can be reached at terraqueous orb (Kayla), end title (Fudgey) or a great fanfare (Jenn). (Though Jenn is on hiatus right now because her laptop is broken, so Kayla or Fudgey would be best for right now!)

Anonymous will be left off for this round (see first section).

Here are the sections that we've come up with. Add your own and we'll edit it into the list.

Anonymous: Why is it turned off?
What do the mods/helpers do, anyways?
How is my activity being monitored?
Activity check changes
Applications/turnover rate
 → Test Drive Comm
Abilities on the application
Villains & Heroes
 → Recent Villain Activity
 → Upcoming Villain Activities/Plots
Death
World Plot/Paradisa Lore
 → Concrete Resolutions, etc.
Canon Updates
Mini-plot Planning
Changes since last HTG
Plots in General
Regular Plots?

How's The Game will now be held quarterly, in order to avoid excessively long stretches in which there is no outlet for discussion.

I'd just like to go out and say that I really hope that people with concerns or ideas will actually go to the villain players about them, and not keep them to themselves.

As someone who plays two villains, I'm always worried that people are afraid to approach me or act against my characters, or are holding onto assumptions about my intentions that are untrue. Just because my villains are awful people who love causing trouble and seeming untouchable doesn't mean that it reflects my opinions as a player at all. I can only assume that other villain players feel this way as well.

I guess this is sort of a general hope that communication surrounding villain/hero activity will be made as smooth as possible, on both sides. As far as myself goes, I enjoy playing villains not because I like playing big mean godmodes, but because I enjoy the hero/villain dynamic, and would love to see that happening here in a way that everyone enjoys to the greatest possible extent.

way to take the words right out of my mouth.

I apped my villain the way I did to make it easier to interact with him on a civil level, but it's always a concern of mine that people are still intimidated by myself as a mun to approach either of us.

This for sure. This is why personal HMDs exist, and I have one on Joshua's journal if people ever feel like he's taking things so far. With a character like him, it is SO easy for CR to spiral out of control. I try to make this very clear to people RPing with him, and get permission before he ever does anything too crazy to someone, but sometimes I still worry that people have issues they aren't bringing to me.

So yeah, I just want to say +1 forever. People can ALWAYS IM me or email me, and if you want to go anon, Joshua's journal has an HMD post that's always there in between game HMDs.

So far, other than the townspeople going missing, I can't say that whatever the villains are up are of direct interest to me. I think that unless you're the overt hero type that intervening in things that don't appear to directly your character or the castle at large is much less of an option.

I guess it makes me sit around and wonder...why should I care? Which isn't really a stab at any villain's activity, but a general query about whether my characters would really notice. Obvious the villains have the notice of their casts because they know what they are capable of, but the rest of us I think tend to be less concerned.

Not that I think every villain should go on a castle-wide killing spree to get noticed or get the kind of CR they want, but there has to be some middle ground here. I'm just not sure what that is (and as a prospective villain player, this is a problem that interests me).

If your character wouldn't care, I suppose it can't be helped unless there is something you would actually like to do to get involved with them? Did you have an ideas or were you just looking for some? Because I can understand that we have characters who grew apathetic or wouldn't care at all about people they don't know being murdered.

Just thinking about this, I realized that there might be something wrong with my perception...

Yes, with my current muses, smaller events like this aren't as much of a concern for them. It's more a case of being self-centered than being apathetic.

When I think of getting involved with the villains, I IMMEDIATELY think that this has to mean combat. Considering the power level of most of the villains and it's easy to just shrug and say, "hey, the OP people will handle it". This is how I approach it most of the time.

But WHY does this have to be the case? WHY is that my perception? What if we aren't the dynamic types? What if want to be involved/build CR but our characters just cannot go toe-to-toe with the villains?

The rest of us seem to fall into a more protective/defensive role, which, I think it what Sylvia and I have been trying to do with the Peace Patrol and Chimera respectively.

And, given that, why must it always be the heroes involving themselves with the heroes? Can't the villains approach the heroes more and incite something?

I think a large portion of this could be solved with communication. As someone who was extremely frustrated with what I felt was an imbalance between Evil vs. Good, I have to admit I've been pleasantly surprised by some villain players when I spoke to them through e-mail or IM.

If there's villain CR you want, I daresay go for it anyway. It goes both ways, some villain players never get approached by others and vice-versa. We have a serious communication problem in the game that we need to work on and even if it's inciting new dynamics between heroes, villains, neutrals and everyone in between, it'll be worth it in the long run.

If your characters don't care, they don't care. As someone who plays an affably evil villain rn... if people don't care that he's a douche, hey, he'll be happy about it.

So it becomes a question for you. Do you want villainous CR? Do you want it to be antagonistic or just like shady friends? I'd be up for building CR if you wanted it, but Tyki isn't inclined to just go after anyone either and he can make actual friends.

Replying to your last bit there:

Situations like that depend on the villain, I think. Most modern day villains aren't the type to walk up to a huge mob of equally matched adversaries to pick a fight. They are much more interested in working behind the scenes to make sure all the cards are going to fall in their favor.

Using my own villain as an example, Arthas is used to fighting with scores of zombie hordes. While he has confidence in his own combat ability, he's not about to march up to ANY of the good guys to pick a fight just to...cause trouble. It's simply not practical.

On the other hand, if he were to stumble upon say...Sylvanas or Koltira alone by themselves? He would most certainly pick a fight, because there's something in it for him if he claims victory. But marching up to Power Girl and shoving her into a telephone pole just because she claims she's a hero just wouldn't happen.

That being said, not all villain CR has to start out negative. Bakhu left recently, but Arthas and Tobias were somewhat close to one another for being on opposite sides of the spectrum -- because Arthas saw himself as a boy in Tobias, thus, they got along even though Arthas was a cold-blooded murderer. The CR later turned negative when Tobias pushed too hard to try and get at Arthas' 'good nature' that had made them CR mates in the first place.

TL;DR: It can be done. But it requires outside communication on AIM/the CR meme/Plurk/etc.

Ha. You make some good points, and thanks for addressing my questions.
