STOP: RANDOM RAMBLING TIME.

I just wanted to let you all know how much I really love you and how amazing I think this place is.

If you think about it, our hobby is coming together every day to build a story. Call it escapism or a creative outlet or a pass-time or a time-killer, whatever, this is one giant, cohesive story with hundreds of different characters in one constantly-evolving setting. While mods may gently guide some plots or ideas, for the most part, everything happens because someone takes the initiative to make it happen, whether it's by introducing something new or by just having their character get involved in something. It's as little as describing the wall as blue or as big as an epic battle on the lawn.

There's this idea proposed by one of my favourite writers: fictional universes and the characters within them can gain a measure of "sentience" and become real, living things. It sounds kind of ridiculous just like that, but if you think of it another way, it sounds pretty amazing. Despite having a huge collective of writers and hundreds of brains between us, we've managed to create ONE cohesive universe, something that we all share, that has taken on a life of its own. Every day, time passes for our characters just as it passes for us. While we're sitting in class or at our jobs, in this story, they're going about their day in Paradisa. We have hundreds of characters with their own thought processes, their own designated personality traits, their own voices... and they make their own choices because of who they are. All writing is like this, but ours is special in that it comes from the minds of hundreds of people, rather than one author. Characters create their own histories, and live their own lives, and impact their surroundings. Put like that, Paradisa is very real, isn't it?

We all created this beautiful little world in our minds. Hell, there are hundreds of people out there who have never been in the game but have all held a role in the creation of this beautiful world. Artists, writers, actors, programmers, storytellers, producers, publishers, even the people who run Livejournal. We have all chipped in little ideas that have come together to make something much bigger.

I think we use "roleplayer" a lot when we could be equally justified in simply calling ourselves writers. The "roleplaying" we do could just as easily be called writing. Borrowed materials, sure, but even then, we all bring a unique and original life to the characters that can't be found in their original canons. We get to do almost anything we want. We've never seen how these characters would react to certain things outside their canon but here in Paradisa we can say with confidence what the characters would do. We can take characters through plot arcs we've never seen in canon before. We can take them through new relationships they never would have made. We can let them learn, let them grow, let them spread their wings in ways canon never would, and never could.

All for the love of roleplaying –– writing.

Sure, it isn't always Shakespeare, and it isn't one of Homer's epics, and it'll never be known as a great work of literature or art or anything... but it is special. It's special in a way few things are. It's hundreds of writers sharing the same journal, hundreds of artists sharing the same canvas, hundreds of musicians in the same orchestra, creating as they go and still managing to make something beautiful. We aren't a garbled mess or a bunch of random paint splatters or some awful tuning session.

We're actually pretty damn good, especially for people who work on the fly and seldom plan beyond a month in advance.

Day 1500 really doesn't hold all that much significance to me, other than being just a number. But 1500 days is a long time, and whether you've been here for all 1500 or just a single day, you're a part of something incredible. Something that is going to continue being incredible, maybe for another 1500 days, and maybe another 1500 after that, and so on.

I love you guys. Keep being incredible, and keep making this place amazing to be a part of.

Don't know about every one in this community,
But to craft great workings of unity,
I always use some good iambic perimeterity.

......yeah that was painful sob ;;

But I second everything you say, I love this game so ♥

I'm pretty sure you just summed up why I love RP, especially this community. I'm also fairly certain I would never have been able to put it to words, much less as eloquently as this.

This was amazing to read. Jenn, I am speechless. AFTER ALL YOUR TALKING ABOUT WRITING I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY, BUT STILL I wanted to express my appreciate for you just having taken the time to write all this down for us. It was incredibly awesome and so sweet.

Awh, what a nice thing to read in the morning. You know, one of the major factors I had in coming here was how much care the mods had to their players and the game. This just goes to show... :)

I agree! Whenever anyone asks about my hobbies, I tend to say that I write instead of roleplay because usually the term 'roleplay' gives a different impression. And it's a lot more of that than anything. I've always liked writing, but when you do it collectively, you're building on each other to make something so much bigger than you would have been able to come up with on your own. It's always so much fun to watch and be a part of.

[identity profile] lanacavelle.livejournal.com 2011-01-10 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
Reading this as a whole is one thing, but reading it and realizing you're part of such an amazing community gives it a whole different feeling. This was a fantastic thing to read, Jenn, and not to mention I think it's a huge morale booster for the community to hear this from a mod too.

Rock on, Paradisa, you amazing lot of doods. ♥

You've described the very thing I love most about not only roleplaying in general, but the type of roleplaying that appeals most to me, and exactly why Para is my dream game. I've been part of a lot of games, but not one that manages to execute the relationship between players, characters, mods, and game world so flawlessly, in a way that creates a very real, very "alive" environment.

It's hundreds of writers sharing the same journal, hundreds of artists sharing the same canvas, hundreds of musicians in the same orchestra, creating as they go and still managing to make something beautiful. We aren't a garbled mess or a bunch of random paint splatters or some awful tuning session.

I ran a tabletop RPG with the same players for years upon years that I poured my soul into called "The Celestial Song" and it ended with one of the NPCs giving a speech about the way in which we were all instruments in a sort of celestial symphony, each piece coming together to play in with our small and unique parts to comprise the fabric of something greater. If I had it here next to me, I'd quote it, because it was the exact same thing you were getting at with that, and it was my tribute not just to the gameworld and players in it, but also to the power of roleplaying in general: my Valentine to my friends who had poured their soul into making the game world I dreamed up into something more than just my creation. Into ours. And that's what any good roleplay setting manages to do - become something that's the collective product of a community of people in a way very few other mediums can represent. I've talked so many times about trying to write that game as a novel, but spoke with one of my friends once about why it never seemed to turn out, and I could never capture what I wanted from it.

She suggested that it was because the story itself was only one small part of what made the game. That being part of creating it, of the act of sitting around, not knowing what was going to happen next and putting our brains together to spin the tale, that the music and physical storytelling and tears were all an essential part of it. She called it an "experience", not a story.

And that's how I feel about this place. So brava to everybody, and I'm so glad to be a part of things here.

Love you Jenn, and love you all. ♥

That was really well written and said. You guys make it easy for someone who's new to RPing as a whole to join in and feel welcome~

So thank you, Paradisa as a whole and never stop being crazy awsome~♥

Awww that was sweet, thanks Jenn.

Oh man... So glad I read this before I headed off to training. This really makes my morning.

I feel so... legitimized! lol

And I have to say. LJ RP is not what is keeping me here. I am not an LJ RPer who happens to be in Paradisa. I'm here because of Paradisa specifically. The community--how wonderful the players, the mods, the game is at its core--that is what is keeping me in this ridiculous, time-consuming, EXPENSIVE hobby. Regardless of whether I happen to be playing at other games on the side, I left my heart in Paradisa. This is the game that convinced me of LJ RP, and anything having to do with fandoms--fic, art, rp all that. You have no idea how against all of that I was before Paradisa. No idea. lmfao

So... thanks again, dudes. Paradisa gives me something social and creative and awesome to spend my extra time on. Para makes me smile.

[identity profile] hulloeverything.livejournal.com 2011-01-10 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
/loves on.

That was so incredibly sweet, hun! And this place IS damn special. The most important thing is that it's important to US.

And, let's face it, we're kind of a big deal.

Congratulations, Jenn, you've just summed up THE thing that I love most about Paradisa - and why I'm coming up on my 2 year mark here when the longest I've been in other games runs about 6 months.

People ask me why I don't keep up with TV these days, and ... well, on a good day Para's better than half the shows out there.

We rock, let's keep it going, guys!

[identity profile] ruined-jaw.livejournal.com 2011-01-10 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Though I've only been a part of the Paradisa community for a few months, I have to say this is the most active, welcoming LJ RP community I've been in since I started RPing, years ago.

It's been great fun, and I hope to continue playing here for as long as y'all will put up with my fickle ass XD

This is a wonderful, wonderful thing to start a day to.

I'm going to echo what Red said, up above. I had never done LJ RP before Para. I've never even stayed in an online community as long as I've stayed here. But being lucky enough to meet so many kind and talented minds has made this more than just a hobby. I won't be overly cheesy and try to come up with what it is, except that this place (and the amazing people in it) have helped me through one of the most hellish years of my life and I'm so incredibly thankful.

And Jenn (and the rest of our mod team, of course), we couldn't do it without you. You give so much of your time and energy... and this place is more beautiful because of it. Thank you.

[identity profile] blasthigh.livejournal.com 2011-01-10 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
This was very touching. (:

I haven't had a RP time with you really (other than a quick Damian / Shin game) but I can see just from this that you're a person who cares greatly about the members in your RP.

I wish there were more mods like you, same goes for the others here. It feels like one big happy family.
