Re: Complaints about World Plot "overtaking" the Community
In the past we've had complaints about expeditions bringing regular castle life to a grinding halt: it overtakes the comms, everyone's paying more attention to that, it spams the communities, etc. There have also been requests for "something for castle-bound residents to do" while the others are on expeditions, which would mean running two plots simultaneously.
Obviously, I don't have the time or energy to run two plots at once, but I think it's a good idea, especially so if the castle-plot is also optional. It gives people who don't go exploring something to do.
But Jenn, you say, it'd be super messy to run TWO plots in the comm at the same time.
Yeah, it would be. That's why we have this solution:
paradisabeyond (which is currently in the process of being set up.)
In Slenderman plot, we played with
paradisalost , a temporary world-below-Paradisa where the kids hung out while kidnapped. Despite Slenderman plot's many flaws, I felt this aspect was a success: it kept two storylines (or sides of things) distinct and kept things "neater" –– I don't think there would be any problems translating a similar community for World Beyond usage.
Another bonus to having another community is that it makes keeping up with events taking place in the Beyond easier -- you have one community for it. Obviously, journal-based stuff would still go down on the main community, as people in the WB can still make journal only posts, but action is kept in one streamlined comm. Hopefully it'll make it easier to follow, whether the posts there are residents going on expeditions, locked behind-the-scenes chapters, or just characters bumming around in the Beyond.
As for the castle-side plots, we've decided that they will be strictly neutral and feel-good plots. For the foreseeable future, we won't be putting on any paralleling plots that are grim, dark, or grimdark. This means no monster rampages, no blood sacrifices, no trauma, etc. It might not always be hunky-dory and rainbows (like, say, mirror plot or memory plot) but I'd like to guarantee we won't be running any horrific things while an expedition is going. One of the main reasons for this is dark overload, the other reason is we don't want characters on the expedition racing back to the castle, or vice versa to get away from it.
But Jenn, you say, it seems awfully convenient that the castle would do these whenever an expedition happens.
Our reasons for these conveniently happening whenever expeditions go down is simply this: the castle is annoyed that people are leaving, and so it puts on all these fun events to tempt characters back. Does it work? Who knows: but the characters can weigh the odds but will never be pressured because of violent robot invasions or something.
So that's it for now: I fully welcome discussion in the comments, questions, plotting, blah blah :)
Thanks, guys!
