Some random tossed out ideas that wes might suggest:

Strengthening the wood via magic ritual? (Willow and Wes could help out)

The thought of using the saplings as sharp wedges to split/weaken the trunk of the tree? Using something heavier to hammer them in which can be whatever material you like.

My most ambitious idea? What is steel but iron with carbon (charcoal) added during the forging process.

Gather up all the charred wood saplings, use the charcoal to help forge an ax head which can actually chop down that sucker. For some reason I love the idea of an axe/tomahawk type thing strengthened at a molecular level with these saplings, just because...it seems fitting.

There are lots of articles about ancient methods of forging steel using charcoal. Crucible steel, damascus steel and so on.

Isn't Xander a carpenter? Aren't there lots of strong beefy people around who would possibly play 'blacksmith'?

Yeah, probably not feasible, but...hell get the pope to bless it too. XD
