Oh hey what final plot point: as he was packing to leave, damn near a month ago, Roy left a fail-safe. He told the journal to unlock parts of his last entry to his friends after a month had gone by. In case he didn't come back.
So any day now, any day you like, if your character was in with Roy they may notice him missing and check his last page. They'll see he's gone after Reno, after all. He's long gone, though, by now.
